Honda Lawn & Garden’s reputation for durability, quality and reliability is a down to its expertise in engines. It is why Honda is the world’s largest engine producer with rival original equipment manufacturers fitting Honda engines in its own products in the Lawn & Garden field.
Honda’s dedication to developing leading internal combustion engines has been reapplied to the development of electrified propulsion solutions as demand for cleaner products grows globally. As a result, Honda entered the battery-powered lawn care segment in 2012. Since, Honda has expanded its cordless and battery-powered range to include lawnmowers, robotic lawnmowers and handheld tools.
Why Honda has gone electric?
Between 2014 to 2018, sales of cordless garden and outdoor products increased by an average of 26.9% YoY across Europe and forecasts predict 42% of the “Powered Lawn Mower” segment sales will be battery-powered (a combination of Cordless and robot) by 2025.
Honda’s brand-wide electrification is underway across cars, motorcycles, and power tools with the green movement in full flow. Honda’s environmentally-conscious approach dates back to the 1950s, though, when it pioneered the development of the cleaner four-stroke engine – new Cordless Lawn & Garden product has been brought to market for similar reasons.
How has Honda gone electric?
Honda’s cordless lawnmowers and handheld tools are subjected to the same quality control measures as their petrol equivalents. As a result, they perform on par and offer the same features and functionality expected from any Honda power tool.
A fitting example of the petrol rivalling-performance is the Cordless range’s largest battery rated at 9Ah. Designed for commercial users, it can withstand extreme continuous current requirements thanks to a temperature monitoring system and an aluminium subframe that aids efficient heat dissipation. The battery is fully waterproof, can sustain a 2m drop and features an LCD read-out that displays the charge level.
All the Cordless products are built around Honda’s Universal Battery System that allows any of the three batteries sizes available – 4Ah, 6Ah, and 9Ah – to be interchanged between all Cordless products.
What is Honda-electric now?
Honda’s Cordless range comprises walk-behind lawnmowers, handheld power tools and robot lawnmowers.
Two derivatives of the walk-behind izy-ON lawnmower are available: 41cm and 46cm cutting blades. The latter variant boasts on-off mulching and a fixed-gear transmission for effortless all-day operation.
The three cordless handheld power tools – a brushcutter, leaf blower and hedgetrimmer – integrate the Universal Battery System and all feature an ergonomic-led design, allowing them to be used over the course of a working day, in total comfort.
Honda’s robotic lawnmower range includes Small Miimo Live, the smallest model designed to maintain lawns up to 400m² in size using real time weather data and a grass growth algorithm to automatically generate an optimised cutting schedule. The range topping Miimo HRM 3000, lawnmower can tackle spaces up to 4000m², however, multiple units can join under the new Multi Miimo system to tackle even larger areas equal in size to three football pitches combined.
